Weather Update

One more hot day in California in front of a rapid cool down. The return of the marine layer and coastal drizzle moves through over the weekend into early next week. This system brings a chance of light rain to the valley over the weekend followed by another system late next week. Scattered showers and thunderstorms continue across Central Mexico into the weekend with much lesser amounts in the north. The upcoming desert acreage will receive another day or so of heavy rains, strong winds, possible hail, and flooding as tropical moisture fuels these systems. This may affect the young seedlings recently planted in the region. Florida will see a few light scattered showers with seasonal temperatures into next week.

Freight Update

California trucks remain steady again this week. Washington apple trucks are adequate as well as Idaho potato trucks. The national average rose .094 over last week and is currently at 3.081 per gallon. California prices rose as well and are currently at $3.976 per gallon. Crude oil dropped a little and is currently at $56.03 per barrel.

Commodity Updates (Click row for summary) Expand All

Apples

Eastern Region:

The Northeast continues to see warmer days, cooler nights, and scattered showers. All good things as it relates to color, brix, and starch content of assorted apple varieties. New crop Gala, Honeycrisp, Macs, Jonathan, Cortland, Golden Delicious, and Red Delicious apples are now available. Empires, out of New York, are underway also. Quality is strong in all areas with some MI/NY/PA growers dealing with hail in an isolated growing area—no major damage to crops has been reported. Much like the Northwest, there are more apples filling the pipeline, which will soften prices and stabilize markets overall.

Western Region:

Washington
Much like the Northeast and on down to parts of N. Carolina / S. Carolina, Northern Georgia, and parts of Alabama, we are seeing increased volumes—on certain varieties (Gala, Honeycrisp, Red Del., and Fuji)—out of the Northwest. As more varieties become available, we will see the stabilization of markets (overall) and prices soften.

As we make our way to October, we will see even more varieties become available—Braeburn, Lady Alice, Jazz…to name a few.

California:

Granny Smith apples are available with Pink Lady apples expected next week/early Oct.

Asparagus

The volume is still heavy from Southern Baja, Mexico, and demand is still light. We will see this trend continue through the middle of November. Both regions in Peru (Ica/Trujillo) have increased volume with the weather beginning to warm up. Spring has started Monday 9/23 in the region. Volume on bigger sizing asparagus has improved with the warmer weather. Markets on both coasts are lower this week with more production from both Mexico, and Peru.

Avocado (Mexican)

The industry is seeing solid inventory levels as Mexico is the dominate supply into the US. Harvest volumes have increased and field prices have decreased. This will be the trend for the next few weeks as we transition from the old crop (Flora Loca) into the new crop (Aventajada). New crop fruit will hit peak season come November-December and size curve will lean heavily on smaller sized fruit (70’s-84’s).
Early season fruit will have very low dry matter and take longer to ripen. As the season progresses and the fruit matures, the dry matter percentage will increase and ripen quicker. We recommend assessing the ripeness of the fruit by touch as fruit may appear green externally.
Checkerboarding is very common this time of year. Uneven ripening of fruit within a case or pallet of fruit. Avocados can grow at different maturity and dry matter levels within the same orchard and the same tree. Fruit will ripen at different times, taste normal and cause no internal damage.
