Weather Update

High pressure returns out West as the storm front moves out of the region to the east today. This system brought substantial precipitation over the weekend however the majority of the rainfall remained to the north of the Salinas Valley. The strawberry growing regions (Watsonville) received around 3 inches total with the Northern Salinas Valley receiving less than 1/4 inch. A warming trend begins on Tuesday with above average temperatures expected by midweek. As the high pressure builds strong winds (20-40mph) will impact Southern California, Baja and the Southwestern desert locals mid-week. Central Mexico will see seasonal temperatures and generally dry conditions cooling with a chance of showers the latter part of the week. The building high will bring a warming trend to Northern Mexico with gusty winds and above average temperatures. A high pressure system moves through the eastern third of the country this week with mostly dry conditions forecast for the Southeastern region.

Berries (Blackberries)

Supply is steady. Demand has been fairly light. Increased production from Mexico has brought more volume into the industry and continued to fill demand. Reports of red cell and wet, leaky fruit have brought growers to cull and discard more fruit which is controlling some of the heavy volume that was coming on last week.

Berries (Blueberries) Alert

Blueberry shipments from South America are increasing and we are slowly seeing the pipelines begin to recover. There's more fruit on the east coast and in the port areas than there has been available for several weeks. We are seeing some Mexican fruit in McAllen as well. California shipping points are still in shorter supply as fruit is not making it to the west coast as quickly as the other areas where it's being brought into country. Overall supply should continue to increase toward late October. Quality has been good on all of the imported blueberries up to this point and quality issues have been non-existent due to the severely limited availability over the past month.

Berries (Strawberries) Alert

Strawberry availability is getting tighter and markets will be increasing due to the affects of the rain over the past weekend. Many grower-shippers picked and packed ahead of the rain and came in with fruit in their coolers Monday morning. However, there's very little fresh harvesting today. Some crews went into the fields to strip rained-on fruit this afternoon and clean up the plants but many growers do not expect a fresh harvest again until Thursday of this week. Precipitation amounts varied across all growing regions with Watsonville receiving the largest measurement (2.25-2.50") but some rain was recorded in all areas between Friday and Sunday. Weather has now cleared and is expected to continually warm up into the coming weekend. Highs will be in the low to upper 80s across the growing regions by the end of the week. This will present another set of challenges with these high temps following the rain event. This is likely to increase presence of mildew, mold and soft berries. Sizing will be small as plants are being stripped of all colored, rained on fruit and will need time to size up again.

The supply of tomatoes has tightened up since Hurricane Matthew caused several areas to finish early for the season. Quincy Florida did not receive any significant weather and supply is increasing as picking schedules have resumed last week. South Carolina usually helps the transition to Florida this time of year but has lost plantings due to extreme wind with fields under water and without the ability to pump or irrigate last week. North Carolina has salvaged what was left of their crops and finished last week wrapping up the season. Virginia received as much as 10 inches of rain also ending the season ahead of schedule in southern portions of the shore where grape and cherry tomatoes are normally harvested. The northern region is continuing to produce what Grape tomatoes they can helping supply but quality is questionable. Cherry tomatoes remain tight and are sold out daily.
