Weather Update

High pressure builds out west deflecting the storm track to the north through the week. This will bring strong winds (25-45mph) to Southern California and the Desert locals late this week. A weak off shore flow and clearing skies will combine to bring in very cold morning temperatures to the west with possible freezing temperatures in the lower valleys and the desert growing regions late this week and again early next week. High pressure continues to bring dry conditions to Mexico through the week. A low pressure system moves into the Sea of Cortez late this week tapping into remnant moisture from Hurricane Otto likely bringing significant rain to Baja Sur, and the Central and Northern Mexico regions of Jalisco and Sinaloa over the weekend. Weak high pressure brings a slight warm up and dry conditions to the region next week. Florida will see a slight cool down mid-week as a weak cold front moves through with scattered showers and breezy conditions. Seasonal temperatures and dry conditions are expected into early next week following this weak system.

Lettuce Iceberg Alert

The iceberg lettuce market is steady with good volume and light demand. Quality continues to be an issue as the damage done by the heat earlier in the season continues to be seen. Burn, pink rib russet spotting and seeder are still the main culprits. Add to this the potential lettuce ice/freeze projected for later this week and we see no hope for an improvement in quality. Quite the contrary; extremely cold weather will not only severely impact quality but overall supplies as well. We are seeing the potential for a growing gap caused by the early season heat that will only be expanded by the cold weather. This could cause an abrupt turnaround in the lettuce market in the near future.

- pa_admin

Quality continues to suffer and supplies could drop dramatically if cold weather becomes more of an issue.

Lettuce Leaf Alert

The leaf and romaine markets are steady but showing some signs of improvement. Quality is still marginal with burn, twist, seeder, pink rib and russet spotting showing up in most samples in varying degrees. Product is being lost in the field to these issues as growers walk around the worst of the lots. The indications are for a growing gap just ahead. Coupled with this is the recent drop in temperatures (ground temps) that indicate a slow growth cycle ahead. Some shippers have begun to firm up pricing in the face of lower yields. Any increase in demand will cause these markets to strengthen rapidly.
