Weather Update

The cold low pressure system out west moves east today with a cold air mass behind the system to bring cold mornings to the inland valleys and the desert locals through the Holiday weekend. Light to moderate lettuce ice is expected each morning as the system stalls and retrogrades to the west over the next couple of days. Warming trend is expected in the desert region early next week. To the south Hurricane Sandra has gained strength and may become a Category 3 storm in the next day or so. Sandra is then expected to enter cooler water and wind shear and downgrade to a tropical depression by early Saturday. Sandra looks to brush the tip of Baja and make landfall over Sinaloa and Sonora on Saturday with 3-5 inches of rain through the region. High pressure builds behind the storm providing warmer above average temperatures early next week.
High pressure will continue to provide mostly dry conditions over Florida into the weekend.

Mexican shipments to the U.S. was up last week, and should hold steady for the next several weeks. The pipeline to the forward warehouse have been filled. We are seeing a more normal range of sizes, peaking on 40s/48s, but availability on 60s/70s continues to be an issue. This new crop fruit is lower in maturity and will take longer to ripen and not darken as much when ripen. Ripe fruit could still be green in color as the skin isn't mature enough for it to darken. Color is not an indication of ripeness, pressure is.
