Weather Update

The high pressure system out west moves out late this week as a cold front moves in from the north over the weekend cooling temperatures across California. A chance of showers are expected along the Central Coast as this system looks to develop into a cut-off low pressures system off the Southern California and Baja coast by early next week cooling temperatures and bringing a slight chance of rain to these regions. Increased moisture moves into Central Mexico with scattered showers and seasonal temperatures. A cold front moves through Florida Thursday into Friday with rain and thunderstorms across the state. a warming trend is then forecast into next week.

Freight Update

California trucks have tightened up considerably since we have transitioned up to Salinas from Yuma. WA Apple trucks are steady as well. Idaho potato/onion trucks remain adequate. The National Average for diesel remained steady from last week and is currently at 2.583 per gallon. An increase of .317 from this time last year. California prices remained steady as well and are currently at 2.937 per gallon. Crude oil remained steady and is currently at 49.22 per barrel.

Apples Alert

Washington - reds are steady on most sizes and they continue to produce mostly larger fruit. Smaller reds have been more available lately. Golden delicious are steady but strong due to light supplies esp. on the smaller sizes. Goldens are peaking on 72/80/88s. Granny-smith are steady to higher on all sizes do to strong demand and light supplies. The fruit is still peaking on 72/80/88's. The availability of 100s and smaller is extremely light! Most shippers are still subbing up in size and grade on anything smaller than a 72/80 and this will continue for the balance of the season. The Gala market is steady on all sizes. Galas are still peaking on 80/88/100/72s and they have better volume in the larger sizes. Fuji's are steady to higher on all sizes and are still peaking on 72/80/88s. Fuji supplies are light. Honeycrisp are steady to higher and they continue to peak on 80/88/100s. Expect the Honeycrisp market to remain very strong until they finish in early May. The quality has been good.
Michigan--Red Delicious are steady on all sizes and they will continue into mid to late June. Smaller fruit has been more available lately. Most other variety's have finished for the season or are close. The quality has been good.
New York---the Empire, McIntosh, Gala, and Red Rome markets are high and strong due to extremely light supplies. All of these variety's will finish in the next couple weeks. Red delicious are steady but strong and supplies are also light but they will go into June. Most of the remaining fruit is large. The quality has been good.

Central Mexico is in production, but quality is fair due to the warm weather in the region. California is having good growing weather and is in full production. The market is stable with more regions in production. Washington state is also having good growing weather and the production is picking up. Peruvian production is picking up with better weather in both growing regions. Both growing regions are still seeing spreading and seeding in the tips due to warm weather over the last month.

Green bell Pepper has dropped in supply, especially on number one large sizes. prices is steady and will continue for the near future. larger sizes on number one grade are limited.

Good quality and condition will continue, supply will remain better for the near future. market and demand are much easier. Packing 25# 15# and 11# units. Both number one and number two grade.

Blackberry supplies continue to get worse. Southern California harvest continues to be minimal. Mexico production is very light and is approaching the end of the season. Quality on these late season berries is fair. Supply shortages will remain an issue until new California harvest begins. Salinas / Watsonville areas are expected to start with light volume in 2 weeks, then gradually build momentum as we move forward. If the weather cooperates, we anticipate to have good availability and excellent quality by mid to late May. Demand is very strong and market prices are firm.

Berries (Blueberries)

Blueberry supplies continue to improve. New California harvest is ramping up in the central valley. Quality and sizing is excellent. Market prices on the new crop are still high, but we expect to see them start to decline as harvest volumes increase. We continue to have consistent supplies of Mexican fruit in addition to the Georgia and Florida harvest. However, these areas are all starting to wind down. Georgia will last another 2-4 weeks, north Florida and Mexico will last another 3-5 weeks. Quality on Florida and Georgia fruit is very strong, Mexico is fair. Markets prices in these regions have started to decline with spot buy opportunities available. North Carolina is expected to start mid May followed by New Jersey crop in June.

We have excellent supplies of strawberries this week. The weather in all growing regions has been ideal. Production has increased and quality is being reported as very good in Salinas and Santa Maria. Salinas harvest is improving and volume is expected to continue to build as we move closer to the summer season. Santa Maria continues to have ample availability of high quality berries. Oxnard will continue to have fruit available this week, but is winding down quickly. Several shippers have already quit harvesting and the quality on the Oxnard fruit is not as strong as the other regions. Demand has been good, but supplies have been very heavy and the market has declined over the last week. As we enter the Mother's Day pull period, we can expect prices to climb slightly. We expect supplies to be excellent with spot buy opportunities available.

We are experiencing another supply gap. As acreage moved forward and demand fell, the market dropped dramatically. We are still not out of the woods so to speak. We are experiencing another gap from the weather we had previously. The market is trending higher and will do so into next week. Quality remains really good with decent crown size, minimal yellowing, and little dehydration.

The celery market is on fire. Expect strong demand and light availability for the rest of the week. The southern California region will be hard pressed to keep production up to meet demand for the entire week. Production in Michigan and Salinas will not begin until June. Large sizing, twenty-four counts in particular have been the lightest in availability and this will continue throughout this week. There have been a few reports of insect damage and slight bowing. The overall quality, however has been good. Escalated pricing is in effect.

Limes continue to peak on smaller sizes such as 230's and 250's while the larger sizes remain snug to unavailable. 110's through 175's are extremely tight with 110's being virtually unavailable. New crops limes are smaller in size and due to the lack of rain and hot temperatures they look to remain peaking on the small sizes for several weeks. Quality has been excellent on the limes over the past several weeks and looks to keep this trend. The market is currently steady on the smaller sizes and higher on the larger sizes.

Export and domestic demand is remains very strong. Shippers will be done with Navels by mid May.. Size growth of the fruit has brought peak sizing up to 72/56 and the smaller sizes of 88s/113s/138s are extremely limited and we see the demand greatly outpace supply for all 113s/ 138s of both fancy and choice grades. There limited amount of Valencia oranges being harvest by some growers, but no volume expected until more growers begin next week with more reporting they will hold off harvest until the end of the month.

Green grapes have gone up in price. Supplies are lighter due to Chile ending their harvest. The Mexican and domestic grown desert grapes are set to be available in the next week or two. The market is steady to higher.

Shippers are listening to offers for volume type orders. Expect strong availability for the rest of the week.

Supplies are stronger on romaine as well as all leaf items. The weights on romaine are averaging 32-35 pounds with 10-13 inches in length. Shippers are willing to make offers on large orders. Romaine hearts have strong availability. Green and red leaf will be in good supplies throughout the week. Defects on leaf that have been seen upon arrivals include seeders, discoloration, and mechanical damage. Santa Maria will have better production throughout the week.

Cantaloupes are increasing in volume over the next week or two. Demand has been pretty good for a while now and looks to possibly increase then taper off after schools get out towards the end of May and the beginning of June. Quality continues to be 95% excellent with a few problems such as softness showing up. We have good volume on 9's, 12's and 15's. The weather has been ideal for growing in all regions and this trend looks to continue. Mexico has started packing lopes and the desert has started with small volume. Offshore supplies are past their peak now. The market is currently lower.

Weather is ideal for growing honeydews in all areas. The market is lower to steady.

Northwest Storage Onions supplies are almost done for the season out of Idaho and will finish up next week. Quality is still good. Washington shippers will start finishing up the middle to end of May. Quality is still being reported as good. Texas growers have building supplies. Quality is being reported as fair. Texas should have good supplies for the next two weeks and then they will slowly wind down. Southern California onion supplies are going in full force with all colors and sizes. Quality is good. Market is steady to slightly weaker out of all areas.

Chilean Packhams are steady and they are heavier to larger fruit but all sizes are available on the west coast. Chilean Forelles are steady and they are still peaking on smaller fruit. The quality for all has been good.

Growers are in the process of planting next year storage crop which has been interrupted by rain and cool weather. The long range forecast is calling for warming weather which should growers getting everything planted. Quality out of Idaho is hit and miss. The main issue showing up is internal bruising with an occasional lot showing up with soft rot and light hollow heart. Shippers are slowing down and grading harder to keep these problems out of the box. Quality out of other areas (Washington, Colorado and Wisconsin) are being reported as good. Look for the market on the 40-80 count to continue to stay firm over the next couple of weeks.

Phoenix, Arizona -- Red potatoes are steady but they are only offering A and B size cartons. The quality is good.
Idaho - old-crop red and gold potatoes are steady on all sizes but supplies are limited. The quality is fair to good.
North Dakota - old-crop red and gold potatoes are steady and both colors are still peaking on A size. Most shippers will flex to compete with other areas. The quality has been good.
South Florida - reds, whites, and golds are all peaking on A size and all are still producing mostly #1 product but supplies are light as the end of the season is coming soon. The quality has been good.
North, Florida -- red, white, and gold potatoes are steady but supplies are still relatively light. All colors are peaking on A-size and the quality is good.

The import stone fruit season is finished. Weather in California's San Joaquin Valley has been positive for good production. The wet winter and plenty of cold nights has growers expecting a great CA stone fruit season. Stone Fruit harvesting has started slowly in the San Joaquin Valley. Some yellow nectarines and white peaches are being packed. Next week we will see more varieties available.

Obregon, Mexico has increased production where supplies of roma tomatoes crossing into the US continue to be plentiful. Roma tomatoes continue to be heavily produced, with round and grape varieties increasing weekly. Further north to the coast, San Diego is also producing roma and grape tomatoes in limited volumes helping saturate the western marketplace. Next week markets are forcasted to be steady with plenty of fruit available until the Central Valley can begin in early July.
